If you want to clean your desk and never get to it, try segmentation. Devote only ten minutes to cleaning the top left quadrant of your desk: put the papers in files (new ones if necessary), put the books on a book shelf (or stack them), and toss the useless stuff. No thinking.
Next day, devote ten more minutes, now to the bottom left quadrant. Day three, top right quadrant. Day four, bottom right quadrant. This the probable order of where you put things when you are going to get to them later. If you are left-handed, you may need to work in the reverse order.
From this moment on, always put papers in files, books on shelves, and useless papers in the recycling bin. The discipline takes practice. When facing failure, start at the beginning again. Perseverance does work.
