Brain Shift

For the last few years, I have been fascinated by the research into left-right brain concepts.  Although it took most of a year to read, The Master and his Emissary by Iian McGilchrist has advanced my understanding of the complex theories on the brain's inner workings.

Most of the advice given in this blog tends towards the left brain strengths - organizing, following steps, setting goals, etc.  Sometimes that worries me, because good management requires constant use of the right brain strengths - conceptualizing, following instincts, creating the "big picture".  McGilchrist helps me relax: the two parts of the brain always work together.  Learning or practicing skills relies on the left brain; when skills become instinctive, the right brain can use them in being creative.

My philosophical approach to advice this week comes from anticipation of my vacation next week.  My whole brain is looking forward to a lot less "left" processing and a lot more "right" dominance.

Vacations are good for us all.  Don't let yours get lost in the pressures of deadlines and obligations.  And, for those who need it, strongly encourage your staff to take theirs.  Your workplace will benefit from more creativity and better relationships.
