Change Standards

A travelling companion once commented that "Change is hard to standardize". While this feels true, there are actions that can help us manage around the unknown factors in change.

Even the revolutionary change in Egypt appears to have been "handled" well. According to reports, the protestors set up groups to manage food and to streamline media communications. Apparently they arranged schedules to accomodate people who were still doing their jobs in the day time, and after the initial, probably spontaneous protests, they decided to focus on bigger demonstrations on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Personally, I hope never to experience revolutionary political change. Nevertheless, we are all experiencing the break-neck speed of technological change. Many people have gone through severe personal change with layoffs and demotions. In fact some big changes we enjoy, such as marriage and the birth of a child.

Here are few actions that will make change easier.
  1. Recognize that change is happening.
  2. Don't think you can stop change.
  3. Discover what is good about the change.
  4. Discuss the change with others.
  5. Manage the "periphery" of the change, as the Egyptians did.
  6. Decide what from the past will work in the future.
  7. Enjoy the new.
