Values in Leadership

McKinsey Quarterly is an excellent email newsletter which I recommend to everyone in management. You can select the content feeds according to your interests. The most recent newletter highlighted three articles of profound meaning to all managers and aspiring managers.

Based on their research, McKinsey's unreserved conclusions are that leaders must incorporate their personal values into their worklife, that the holistic approach to management is more profitable than the driven approach, and that we must reveal ourselves to our colleagues and staff.

"The Value of Centered Leadership" summarizes six years of statistical research based on five dimensions: meaning, positive framing, connecting, engaging, and energizing. Originally the study began as an assessment of leadership by women, something not commonly studied. The research expanded, finding that anyone who manages holistically improves organizational performance.

"How Centered Leaders Achieve Extraordinary Results" translates their research into recommendations on how to be a Centered Leader. The five dimensions are explained in more detail, with examples from leaders in well-known organizations.

Finally, "Revealing Your Moment of Truth" counsels living your values in a transparent manner. This can be measured by asking yourself if your staff could identify your core values and describe their benefits. The challenge is supported by a heart-stopping example.

Taken together, these articles could help all of us achieve extraordinary goals, because everyone is a leader in some aspect of their life.
