Art of the Possible

How do we achieve the impossible? By practicing the Art of the Possible.

Practicing only the possible can be a deadening approach to management - stifling good ideas and creative solutions. Turning the practicing of the possible into an art form incrementally drives us along the path to achieving what seemed to be out of reach. Develop a creative "eye" for what stretches the envelope without actually destroying it.
  • Encourage creative ideas. When a staff member makes an outrageous suggestion, hold your breath on your initial reaction of incredulity. What aspect of the suggestion would actually be practical to implement, or at least explore? Ask the suggestor or your team to dissect the idea and select the parts that do seem within the realm of possibility.
  • Thrive on rejection. If senior management turns down your project proposal, climb out of your despondency by analysing which parts of your project could be achieved without higher management approval. While being careful not to undermine management's decision, proceed under your own authority to prepare a better foundation for an eventual presentation of your revised proposal.
  • Acquire a new skill. Certain skills, in particular public speaking, are terrifying but extremely beneficial for managers. Rather than helplessly contemplating the overwhelming goal, find one small step in the right direction. Once it is under your belt, find another step that is a bit larger and relies on the first. Repeat innumerable times, always building on the first steps. Incredibly, you may actually exceed that seemingly overwhelming goal and still feel comfortable.
