In our commitment to carefully manage every moment of time available, we need to set aside time for creativity. Schedule an hour weekly in your calendar, at a time when you will probably not be interrupted - this is to reduce the chances that you will succumb to the temptation to pay attention to interruptions. Shut your office door or turn your chair firmly away from the entrance to your work space. Let your mind flow in a non-linear fashion - thinking about a particular problem or just mentally scanning the issues of the office.
If you need to keep your mind from uselessly churning, pick one problem and write down all solutions that could possibly be applied, even if they are crazy. The time you are spending is for creativity, not necessarily for selecting the best solution. If you get stuck, write down all the pros and cons of each solution. Add more solutions as you think of them. By practicing this approach, you will find that at other times during the week, solutions and new ideas will come to you more easily.
